Don’t Take It Personally

Hi Magical One!

In 2010 something significant happened to me. That was the year I started my 2 year long raw food detox.

It only ate raw food for 2 years. During that time I had some huge shifts happen. Not only did I lose 40 pounds and keep them off – which is significant – but I also had a huge spiritual awakening.

It shifted how I view everything.

There were two major lessons:

1) I am responsible for my own happiness

2) Don’t take anything personally #1 was the most profound. Then came #2 – WOW – my perspective of others completely shifted and has never been the same.

Let’s talk about #2.It’s agreement #2 of Don Miguel Ruiz’s classic “The Four Agreements”.

My favorite block of words from it is:

“Whatever happens around you, don’t take it personally… Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world.

Even when a situation seems so personal, even if others insult you directly, it has nothing to do with you. What they say, what they do, and the opinions they give are according to the agreements they have in their own minds…Taking things personally makes you easy prey for these predators, the black magicians. They can hook you easily with one little opinion and feed you whatever poison they want, and because you take it personally, you eat it up….

But if you do not take it personally, you are immune in the middle of hell. Immunity in the middle of hell is the gift of this agreement.”

Before I read this I took everything personally. I didn’t know that what others said to me was really a reflection of their own inner world. Their words always affected me.

After reading this it was like the self-help world smacked me upside the head with a 2×4 and drove it deep into my soul.

Everything changed.

I started to see how others truly struggled and how I could be the happiest versions of myself despite whatever they were going through. In fact, that put me on the path I’m on now of coaching. This lesson has given me permission to show up for others the way they need me to – without judgement.

How?

Because whatever they are going through is not taken personally by me. It’s the most freeing feeling! If you feel you need this lesson too, check out the book. It’s a short read.
